A view of the Millennium Development Goals

2010 is a special year for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as we mark 10 years since the MDGs were signed, by 189 heads of states committing to reduce extreme poverty and hunger; achieve universal primary education; promote gender equality and empower women; reduce child mortality; improve maternal health; combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases; ensure environmental sustainability; and develop a new global partnership for development.

The MDG Review Summit, officially called the High-level Plenary Meeting of the General Assembly, will take place during 20 – 22 September in New York and is hosted by the Secretary-General. The Government of Malaysia will be represented at this important meeting.

The objective of this Summit is to take stock of proven initiatives that made progress on the Goals and for governments to commit to a concrete action agenda to achieve the MDGs, as well as other internationally agreed development goals. The Summit will comprise six plenary meetings and six closed roundtable sessions over the course of three days.

The Summit is expected to undertake a comprehensive review of successes, best practices and lessons learnt, obstacles and gaps, challenges and opportunities, “leading to concrete strategies for action”.

The President of the General Assembly has appointed two ‘Co-facilitators’ to lead the inter-governmental negotiating process. The Co-facilitators are the Ambassadors of Senegal and Denmark to the United Nations in New York. In addition to the official preparatory process, a number of related events and reports will feed into government deliberations leading to the September summit.
