Connecting Through ICT:
Empowering Girls Through Education

Monday, 8 September 2014 * 4:00pm - 5:15pm
Royal Chulan Hotel Kuala Lumpur

More girls now are entering school than ever before, thanks to inspiring progress over the past two decades.

On average, 23 percent fewer women than men are online in the global south. In some regions, the size of the gap exceeds 40 percent, which constitutes a striking, second, digital divide – one where women and girls are being left behind.

On September 8, International Literacy Day, UNICEF Malaysia is hosting an Activate Talk in Kuala Lumpur to discuss the role of ICT innovations in providing a quality education for girls and young women.

This Activate Talk explores what happens when one of the most transformative technologies in the world – ICT — meets one of the most transformational forces in the world – education – and unleashes the potential of one of the world’s most untapped resources…girls and women. And what’s at stake, when it doesn’t.

Activate Talk KL will feature inspirational speakers, highlighting innovative approaches, covering four themes; accessibility, communications, (dis)connectivity and ICT.

The Activate Talk KL forms part of the 7th World Summit on Media for Children, which is co-organised by the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) and the World Summit on Media for Children Foundation, and hosted by Radio Television Malaysia (RTM).

UNICEF has declared 2014 as the Year of Innovation for Children to commemorate CRC@25. Activate Talk KL is part of the global Activate Talks, a series of events around the world which bring together inspirational speakers to share innovations that deliver progress on the major issues confronting children, especially the most vulnerable and marginalized children in each country.
