This report concentrates on the effects of COVID-19 on children. The objective of this study is to increase the understanding of the lasting effects of COVID-19 on children’s outcomes on dimensions, such as food and nutrition (e.g. number of meals), health (e.g. access to health services when sick), education (e.g. school attendance), child protection (e.g. child discipline) and economic welfare (e.g. poverty).

The results within this report provide a snapshot of the changes in well-being and living standards for children in Malawi between 2019/20 and 2023 using a unique panel study where 35 per cent of households from the Fifth Integrated Household Survey (IHS5) were re-interviewed in early 2023. This design enables us to analyse changes for the period just before the start of the pandemic to nearly three years after the start.
