Antananarivo, September 04, 2020. To ensure the continuity of the vaccination services in Madagascar, the World Bank and UNICEF are strengthening their support to the Ministry of Public Health through the Expanded Program on Immunization, particularly in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

130 refrigerators from the World Bank and prevention kits from UNICEF were delivered today to SALAMA premises located in Anosiala Ambohidratrimo.

The delivery of these 130 refrigerators, in addition to the 500 solar refrigerators provided in 2019 by UNICEF with GAVI funds, will be of capital importance for the beneficiary health centers and hospitals. This equipment will indeed enable the 15 districts of the 5 regions to ensure the quality of vaccines. All the more so since most health centers still use gas-powered refrigerators that are no longer approved, in addition to the problem of oil and spare parts.

The objective of this endowment is to ensure the availability of quality vaccines at all immunization sites and to protect health personnel in charge of vaccination and their patients from COVID-19.

Each year, the Expanded Program on Immunization of the Ministry of Health aims to ensure that nearly 1,000,000 Malagasy children and 1,228,000 pregnant women can benefit from free vaccination, including routine immunization in hospitals and basic health centers to protect them from vaccine-preventable diseases. It should be noted that the health of mothers and children remains one of the priorities of the Malagasy Government and is one of the priority challenges set out in the Program for the Emergence of Madagascar. "It is essential that women and children can continue to use maternal and child health services, and in particular to receive all series of vaccinations according to the immunization schedule, in a healthy environment without any risk of being contaminated by COVID-19”, explains Mr. Michel Saint-Lot, UNICEF Representative in Madagascar.
