Natasha's Journey from School Dropout to Entrepreneur
The Let Us Learn Programme: Helping Young People in Liberia to Build a Better Future
Natasha B. Robertson was a 17-year-old girl who had dropped out of high school and was living on the streets of Monrovia, Liberia. She had been brought to the city from the rural area with the promise of a better education, but instead she was forced to work long hours selling goods on the street and rarely attended school.
Natasha was resistant to change when she first joined the Let Us Learn programme, a UNICEF-supported program that provides education and skills training to out-of-school children and youth in Liberia. She missed her old friends and didn't see the point in going back to school.
But with the help of the peer educators, social workers, and guidance counsellors in the program, Natasha slowly started to turn her life around. She re-enrolled in high school and began attending regularly. She also started taking classes in pastry making, which she had always been interested in.
Natasha's hard work paid off. She graduated from high school and completed her pastry class as one of the top students. She is now a successful pastry chef and owns her own business in Caldwell. She is also a role model for other adolescent girls who have faced challenges in their lives. She aspires to go to the university in the near future.
Natasha's story is a reminder that it is never too late to turn your life around. With hard work and determination, anything is possible.
