In the heart of Liberia, a small village named Jawejah witnessed a story of resilience and hope. In May 2024, Anika B. Zogbo, a five-month-old infant, received her routine PENTA-1 vaccine at Behsao Clinic. Her mother, filled with the usual worries of a parent, hoped this visit would protect her child from future illnesses.

However, seven days later, Anika developed a fever, and her left thigh, where the injection was administered, became swollen and red. Concerned, her mother returned to the clinic, but despite the initial treatment, Anika’s condition did not improve. Desperate and unable to bear her child’s suffering, Anika’s mother tried to alleviate the pain with hot water compresses.

The situation caught the attention of the District Surveillance Officer (DSO) during a routine supervision. Realizing the severity, he and the vaccinator traveled 15 kilometers to Jawejah to see Anika. Upon arrival, they immediately referred her to the Liberia Government Hospital (LGH) and arranged for transportation.

At LGH, Anika was admitted and received thorough medical care. Her mother, meanwhile, was given psychosocial support to help her cope with the stress. After several days of treatment, Anika fully recovered. The team from the County Health Team (CHT), WHO, and UNICEF accompanied her back to Jawejah, where the community welcomed them with open arms.

To address the concerns and misinformation about vaccines, a dialogue meeting was held with community leaders and Anika’s family. They discussed the importance of vaccinations and reassured the community of their safety. Anika’s parents, along with the leaders, pledged to ensure that all eligible children in the village would receive their routine vaccines.

Anika’s story is a testament to the power of community, the dedication of healthcare workers, and a mother’s unwavering love. It highlights the importance of vaccines in safeguarding children’s health and the collective effort needed to dispel fears and promote well-being.
