UNICEF Lao PDR Announces its First-Ever Youth Advocate
Chanphone Xongchaiyieu (Chan) is the first Youth Advocate for UNICEF Lao PDR, with whom she will focus on advocating for environmental and climate action.
Vientiane Capital, 9 June 2023 - UNICEF Lao PDR has proudly announced Chanphone Xongchaiyieu, or Chan, as its first-ever Youth Advocate. The 18-year-old from Houaphanh Province will be working with UNICEF to raise awareness and advocate for action around climate change and environmental issues and its impact on young people, as well as lending her voice to promote the rights of young people in general.
Chan's appointment aligns her with other young people globally who are committed to instigating positive change for children and youth.
"I feel honoured that UNICEF has chosen me to be their first youth advocate in Lao PDR. I will do my best in my role as a voice representing young people in Lao PDR and an advocate for climate and environmental action," shared Chan.
Chan's advocacy work stems from her involvement with the Houaphanh Youth Media, a national youth media platform driven by Lao National Radio in association with UNICEF. Additionally, she's a member of Xamneua Young Volunteers, a volunteer group based in Xamneua district of Houaphanh province that focuses on raising environmental awareness among young people and the wider public.
"We are pleased to welcome Chan as our first Youth Advocate in Lao PDR," Dr. Britto Rebello said. "Her dedication to creating a better world is commendable, and we believe her efforts will further help advocate and realise a healthier and safer environment for all," said UNICEF Lao PDR Representative, Dr. Pia Rebello Britto.
The timing of Chan's appointment also coincides with UNICEF’s 50th anniversary in Lao PDR, thus marking a new chapter in youth advocacy for the organisation in Lao PDR and a key moment to amplify the voice of children across Lao PDR.
