American Airlines Change for Good® Program: more funds for children and AIDS in the Latin American and the Caribbean region

Since December 1999, the Change for Good program has provided UNICEF and the airline industry with a unique partnership opportunity, as it enables UNICEF to communicate with global audiences while highlighting the airlines’ commitment to social responsibility, and ideally increasing customer donations and loyalty.

American Airlines is a Change for good participant since 1994. American Airlines and the U.S. Fund for UNICEF are working together to take the Change for Good program to a new level of success by creating "Champions for Children" - a volunteer program designed to empower flight attendants and other AA staff to take action and improve children's lives as they perform everyday work duties. To date, more than 900 American Airlines staff has already signed up to be Champions for Children and the number continues to rise.  In December 2006, American Airlines reinvigorated their support for the program with the help of Airline Ambassadors International and the Association of Professional Flight Attendants. The program is designed to encourage flight attendants and others to take action and improve children’s lives as they perform everyday work duties.

Through its re-launch of the Change for Good program, American Airlines raised US$50,000 for HIV/AIDS and children in its first three months for the region. Funds from the AA program are to be shared between general programs for Latin America and other regions.

The new contribution includes US$ 20,000 for  Peru  which hosted a  field visit where the on-board video was filmed. During the field visit, a group of dedicated flight attendants visited community centers, health clinics, prevention and HIV counselling centers and schools supported by UNICEF.  The journey helped demonstrate the commitment of the flight crews participating in the Change for Good® program and also the strong implementation and reporting record of UNICEF Peru.   US$30,000 will go to a thematic funding proposal from Colombia.

Apart from American Airlines, Change for Good in the Latin American and the Caribbean region will also run with another One World Partner, LAN Airlines. These funds raised during the initial years of the program, however, will only benefit Ecuador, Peru, Chile, and Argentina, all of which are major hubs for the region.
