My most profound solidarity is with the families and relatives of the victims and all those people who have been affected by Hurricane Irma in Cuba and the rest of the Caribbean.

As every hour passes we have greater understanding of the devastating effects that have been caused by the hurricane, razing many infrastructures in its path, and flooding fields and communities.

UNICEF is in constant communication with the Cuban authorities, monitoring the scale of the damage, in order to offer urgent help that is required so that all those children and adolescents on the island have access to safe water, basic hygiene to avoid illnesses, and an early return to school, in order to guarantee their safe environment.

UNICEF recognises and has full confidence in the strength and solidarity of the Cuban people when facing difficult situations such as this, in a society that needs to put the interests of children at the centre of its hearts and efforts.
