News Digest, June-July 2009. Addressing ‘the Teaching Crisis’
Upon the request from the Ministry of Education and Science of the Kyrgyz Republic, a team of international and national experts are conducting a teacher shortage study with support from UNICEF. The study includes a comparison of actual teacher shortages reported by national- and district-level authorities, principals and students; an estimate on teacher absenteeism and prolonged teacher absences; and an assessment of available incentives for teachers to remain in school or become teachers. The report will be available in September 2009.
