News Digest, June-July, 2009. Defining the Nutritional Status of Children
On 8 June 2009, with UNICEF support, a national survey began in Bishkek and northern Kyrgyzstan on nutritional status of children aged 6-59 months and their mothers. The survey will provide data on stunting and malnutrition, the prevalence of iron deficiency, anemia and the lack of folic acid. It will also find out mothers’ awareness of adequate nutrition, breastfeeding, Vitamin A supplementation and the use of enriched flour. After the results of the survey are verified by Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (the United States Department of Health and Human Services) and the Ministry of Health of the Kyrgyz Republic, the findings will be made publicly available and be used for national response activities.
