Minister Hanna to Address Meeting of Regional UNICEF Decision-makers

KINGSTON, February, 2013 –  UNICEF’s Deputy Executive Director, along with UNICEF’s top decision-makers from across the Caribbean and Latin American region, will gather in Jamaica this week to examine pressing issues facing adolescents in the region.  


UNICEF Jamaica will host the heads of UNICEF country offices in the region at the Regional Management Team (RMT) meeting on 26-28 February, 2013, at the Mona Visitors Lodge, UWI.  UNICEF’s Deputy Executive Director, Ms. Geeta Rao Gupta, who is visiting the region for the first time, will also join the meeting.


On the first day, Minister of Youth and Culture, Honourable Lisa Hanna, will deliver the keynote address. Well-known experts Professor Herbert Gayle and Dr. Peter Figueroa will highlight the impact of violence and sexual/reproductive health issues on adolescents. Abigail Harrison, Consultant Paediatrician/Adolescent Medicine Specialist at UWI, will also make a presentation  about the adolescent brain. Several Jamaican youth advocates will also work with the UNICEF representatives to examine a range of topics, including political and civic participation, sports and development, HIV, sexual abuse and juvenile justice.  


The RMT meeting is held twice a year to formulate UNICEF’s management decisions in the Caribbean and Latin American region. In addition to the heads of country offices, the meeting will be attended by UNICEF Regional Director, Mr.  Bernt Aasen, his advisory staff from the regional office in Panama and UNICEF Programme Policy and Operations staff from New York Headquarters.
