Following the increased influx of refugees from Afghanistan to Iran since Aug. 2021, UNICEF Iran partnered with other humanitarian agencies and the Bureau for Aliens and Foreign Immigrants Affairs (BAFIA) to support the efforts of the Iranian Government in delivering life-saving assistance to refugee children and their families.

On 28 June, UNICEF Representative in Iran, Dr. Robin Nandy joined international and local partners in a visit to Niatak settlement built in an area close to Afghan border in Sistan and Baluchistan province to review the work progress and plan for next priorities.

Through its contributions, UNICEF will help provide clean water and sanitation to Niatak camp residents by constructing water feeder lines from Zabol to Niatak for 15 km, as well as provision of  water network, water reservoir, pumping facilities and sewage treatment plant inside Niatak camp.

UNICEF will also support the government to ensure the fair access of all refugee children, adolescents, and families to health, WASH, education and protection services. Once fully functional, Niatak will host about 6,500 individuals in 1,300  shelters.
