UNICEF welcomes the additional support and a top up- contribution of USD 500,000 by the Republic of Korea in support of water, sanitation and hygiene programmes to help newly arrived Afghan refugees in the Islamic Republic of Iran. The donation was officially announced by H.E. Yun Kanghyeon, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Iran, and Dr. Robin Nandy, UNICEF Representative in Iran in a signing ceremony hosted by the Korean embassy on 21 November.

“Half million is a just a mere bagatelle, against the huge demands of financial resources of the UNICEF projects in the world, but this is the small token of Korean government and people of Korea for the determination to support your philanthropic project in the world. Despite multi-faceted economic complications at the moment, the commitment of Korea remains unchanged. I commit myself again to keeping our good friendship and working relationship with this decent office, UNICEF,” said Mr. Yun, the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea.

In December 2021, Republic of Korea provided a 1.5 million USD donation to UNICEF as part of a wider UN joint project to improve access to clean water and sanitation including construction and maintenance of latrines, showers and laundry facilities for some 7,000 refugees arriving at the eastern provinces of Iran.

“We are grateful for the generous contribution of the Republic of Korea, allowing us to continue and expand our critical, lifesaving support to the response to the influx of refugee into Iran. Specifically, this additional support will help us in designing and constructing a water feeder line and water storage tank in Niatak refugee settlement in Sistan and Baluchistan province and will help us and our partners to ensure essential water and sanitation services to the refugees and surrounding communities hosting them.” said Dr. Nandy.

UNICEF is implementing this project through a partnership with Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), BAFIA (Central and provincial), Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), Water and Wastewater Engineering Company (Central and provincial) and the technical department of the Governor office, as the major role players.
