Adolescents showcase digital solutions to ministries, private companies and investors in Indonesia

Young changemakers demonstrate innovative ways to improve their lives

Jakarta, 25 July 2020 – Twenty young people from disadvantaged backgrounds today showcased six innovative digital prototypes for social good to government officials, private companies and investors during a live, online demo. Using smartphone applications, online games and websites, they demonstrated solutions for issues ranging from waste management to self-love and mental health.

The Demo Day, livestreamed through UNICEF’s YouTube channel, was the finale of the Markoding Digital Innovation programme, developed by UNICEF and Yayasan Daya Kreasi Anak Bangsa (Markoding) with support from global technology company ARM and DKI Jakarta Provincial Education Agency. The 20 finalists were selected from 482 adolescents in Jakarta who participated in the initial stage of the programme.

The young people, aged between 15 and 19 years took part in a two-month intensive boot-camp training, supported by volunteer mentors from various professional backgrounds including graphic designers, software engineers, social workers, investment analysts, teachers, students, founders of start-up companies and diplomats. The bootcamp equipped them with technical and 21st-century skills such as creativity, decision-making and teamwork so they could identify problems and develop digital solutions as part of a team.

“Young people’s skills-building is a priority in the fast-changing world we live in,” said UNICEF Indonesia Representative, Debora Comini. “Through co-creation programmes like this innovation challenge, we hope that adolescents are encouraged to learn new skills, continue exploring their ideas, solve problems and become ready to contribute to their country’s prosperity.”

A recent UNICEF study on skills for the future shows that adolescents consider creativity, critical thinking and digital skills as the most important competencies for their future. Many adolescents felt that they were not developing these skills through their education. These findings are in line with private sector respondents, who highlighted a significant lack of transferable skills among new recruits.

"We want to foster a generation of young people who are conscious of the problems around them, so they can use their creativity to develop solutions to the challenges they face, actively hone their empathy and willingness to learn, and be confident that they can bring change,” says Markoding CEO & Founder Amanda Simandjuntak.

The new skills they learned during the programme also helped participants to cope with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. “I learned not only technical skills to develop apps, but time management, self-discipline and communication skills through the programme,” said 16-year old Zelita. “This is especially important during the COVID-19 pandemic, as we need to continue learning from home.”

About the Markoding Innovation Challenge:

The Markoding Innovation Challenge consisted of various workshops, including Teacher Training, Mentor Training, School Roadshow (Digital Innovation Challenge, Digital Innovation Workshop and Digital Innovation Bootcamp.) The initial Innovation Teacher training, conducted in November 2019, was attended by 46 teachers from middle schools, high schools and vocational and PKBM schools in Jakarta. The teachers were given design thinking training to create innovative adolescents with problem-solving skills.

The programme continued with a one-day Digital Innovation Challenge conducted in 21 schools with 482 students from ranging from middle school, high school, vocational and PKBM schools in Jakarta. Convened by 33 volunteer mentors who received design thinking training in advance, the participants discussed social issues affecting them, including mental health, waste management, cyberbullying and hoaxes, education, racism, legal injustice, entrepreneurship.

A total of 27 teams with the best problem mapping and solutions were selected to take part in a three-day Innovation Challenge during which each team received training and mentoring to build digital solutions through websites, animations, games or mobile applications. The six best teams were selected to the two-month Markoding Digital Innovation Bootcamp, from January to March 2020 to turn their digital solution into reality. Having completed the bootcamp successfully, the participants presented their digital solutions at the online Demo Day on this Saturday, 25 July 2020.
