Living through this pandemic is not easy. COVID-19 has impacted all our lives in one way or another. For many, that means additional stress. This is normal.
Children can also feel overwhelmed – for most, their schools closed, and their everyday lives have been turned upside down. But there are things you and your family can do to help your child through these challenging times.
Tips for parents & caregivers
Take a look through this web page for information on how to protect yourself, your children and others from COVID-19, and how to help keep your children learning no matter where you are.
Keep your children safe

Wear a mask!
When you go out, make sure your child is wearing a mask properly. Paper masks should be worn only once, while cloth masks can be washed with soap after each use. Make sure the mask covers the nose and mouth. Once you put on the mask, do not touch it. Wash your hands with soap before you put on a mask and after you take it off.
Masks should not be used by anyone unable to remove the mask without help, including infants and young children, or anyone having difficulty breathing.

Wash your hands with soap!
Make sure your children wash their hands with soap and running water for at least 20 seconds, especially before they eat, after using the toilet, and when they have to go out and return home. If you do go out, try to bring hand sanitiser with you in case you can’t find soap and water.

Physical distance!
When you go out, make sure your children stay at least one meter from others. Be aware of your surroundings. If you are in a queue and someone gets too close, politely ask them to keep their distance. Avoid large gatherings and events.

Set up a routine
Plan a daily routine with your child, so they know when it’s time to get up, study, exercise, play or just relax. A routine can help a child feel motivated. If your child seems stressed, you may want to adjust your plan and allocate more time for physical activities – especially for younger children.

Talk to your child
Turn off your phone and TV each day and talk to your child. Encourage them to ask questions and share their feelings with you. Start by inviting your child to talk about their daily life. Try not to minimise or avoid any concerns they may have. Be sure to acknowledge their feelings and assure them that it’s natural to feel scared about COVID-19 or be challenged with their schoolwork.

Stay safe online
Digital platforms provide an opportunity for children to keep learning, play and stay in touch with their friends. But increased online activity also brings heightened risks for your children’s safety, protection and privacy. Discuss the internet with your children so that they are aware of these risks. Establish rules together about how and when the internet should be used. Set up parental controls on their devices to mitigate online risks, particularly for younger children. Remind your children not to share personal information online.

Keep in touch with others
