Delcie Senatus: A Beacon of Hope for Displaced Children
"The challenges may be many, but they never stop me from doing my job with all my heart" - Nelcie Senatus
Among the shadow workers working to resolve the humanitarian crisis currently waging in Haiti, Nelcie Senatus inspires compassion through her example of unwavering commitment. Aged 26, she works at GRABEC, a UNICEF border partner in Ouanaminthe, as part of the response to the migration crisis. For her, the fate of deported children is not only a cause but a calling, a mission, which she embraces with all her being.
"My job is to help all children, especially those in my community, and I feel that I am helping to transform their lives", says Nelcie.
Nelcie's commitment to children goes far beyond her professional obligations. She is a tireless advocate for their rights and well-being; her determination is reflected through her actions. Whether it's organizing activities to put a smile on their faces, accompanying them to the doctor, or dealing with the current situation's many challenges, she is a constant presence in their lives.
"My [personal] story has had a profound impact on me and continues to motivate me to take action on behalf of these vulnerable children," confides Nelcie.
Nelcie's path to this noble mission is not just a career choice; it is deeply personal. Her experience has profoundly impacted her, inspiring a passion for protecting those in need. This personal connection informs her work, which is shaped by empathy and a deep understanding of children's struggles.
"Lana, one of the children we have helped, embodies the resilience and strength of the children we assist," says Nelcie.
Last April, Lana, barely a year old, arrived at GRABEC under the care of IBESR. When she arrived, she did not speak, and her name remained unknown until she decided to express herself. Lana will soon be placed in a foster family, thanks to a partnership of UNICEF, IBESR, and GRABEC. This story illustrates the impact of Nelcie's commitment, whose dedication has transformed Lana's life from one of uncertainty and vulnerability to one of hope and promise. Lana's journey symbolizes the many lives Nelcie has touched and positively influenced.
In the face of a humanitarian crisis marked by adversity and uncertainty, Nelcie Senatus stands as a beacon of hope. Her dedication to displaced children is not just a job, it is a vocation. She is not just a social worker; she is a dreamkeeper, an advocate, and a true inspiration. Through education, protection, and unwavering commitment, Nelcie promotes values of acceptance and comfort to children.
"My hope for the future is that unaccompanied displaced children will cease to be abused and that their families will remain united."
Her aspiration is a future where every child, regardless of their upbringing, can grow up in a safe environment, surrounded by love and infinite possibilities. Her hope is that those children will one day enjoy their fundamental rights, have access to quality education, and embrace a future full of promises.
Nelcie Senatus is a light in the darkness, a voice for the voiceless, and an inspiring example of tireless dedication to protecting and nurturing vulnerable children.
As part of its ongoing efforts to promote the rights of every child, regardless of their circumstances, UNICEF continues to collaborate closely with governments and partners in Haiti and beyond to ensure the protection of children and the provision of essential humanitarian assistance to them and their families.
