What is RUTF?
RUTF is ready-to-use therapeutic food. It’s an energy dense, micronutrient paste made using peanuts, sugar, milk powder, oil, vitamins and minerals that is used to treat those threatened by severe wasting – the most dangerous form of malnutrition. Millions of malnourished children have been treated through a continuous course of RUTF.
WHY NOW?
Globally, 1 in 5 deaths among children under the age of 5 is attributed to severe wasting, making it one of the top threats to child survival.
With the impact of war in Ukraine on global food security even more children are at risk of wasting, not only because Russia and Ukraine are among the world’s top agricultural producers and exporters, but also because shortage in food and fuel are causing prices to soar.
The price of RUTF is projected to increase by up to 16 per cent over the next six months. Without urgent action, the cost increase will put more children’s lives at risk.
WHY UNICEF
UNICEF procures and distributes an estimated 75-80 per cent of the world’s RUTF supply. We won’t stop until every child survives.
