Violence and impunity are seriously affecting the Guatemalan population. Boys, girls and adolescents are direct and indirect victims of this situation. On average, 46 children, mostly teenagers, are killed each month. Most of these deaths are caused by firearms. 53,764 crimes were committed against children under 17 between 2008 and 2009, the most frequent ones being murder, rape, injury, disappearance, kidnapping, abduction, corruption of minors and sexual assault.

According to a report by the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG), 88% of crimes against minors reported in 2009 have gone unpunished.
