Thanks to the Akelius Digital Language Learning Course, Dieu, Silamit, and Fajer feel more optimistic about their smooth adjustment in Greece.
Silamite, 15, and Dieu, 13, from the Congo, along with 14-year-old Fajer from Iraq, are looking at the screen of their tablet focused and are repeating the words read aloud to them by their teacher in the classroom, at the 4th Low Secondary School of Chalkida.
The three children, who reside in a refugee accommodation facility near Chalkida, are mastering the Greek language to integrate into the local school system. The Congolese siblings, Silamite and Dieu, arrived in Greece three years ago, while Fajer has been here for only a few months.
Their early time in Greece, away from their country, was marked by challenges. "I didn't speak Greek and I was nervous," says Silamite, while Dieu adds:
"When I came to Greece, I felt fear," emphasizing the importance of language in order to feel comfortable in a new country.”
The Akelius Digital Language Learning Course empowers students, particularly refugee and migrant students in their new educational environments, to learn and enhance their language skills. Through interactive lessons, students can improve their speaking, listening, and reading abilities while exploring cultural nuances of the language, thereby reducing stress and facilitating better adaptation "It's an innovative way for children to learn, because this generation of children is much more familiar with technology," says Pepi Papadimitriou, Refugee Education Coordinator of the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports.
"I mean, learning the Greek language can be challenging for them, but this approach makes it more enjoyable and easier,", she concludes.
"I really like the grammar in Akelius because it helps me to listen and read," confirms Dieu, who, thanks to the Akelius Digital Language Learning Course, has the opportunity to listen to listen to native Greek speakers and become familiar with pronunciation and correct intonation.
Silamite adds enthusiastically: " I really enjoy the games and music of Akelius and they help me learn Greek!”
The Akelius Digital Language Learning Course is designed to adapt to the needs and different language levels of each student, providing personalized learning solutions that help children make substantial progress.
It’s developed by the Akelius Foundation in collaboration with UNICEF, has been utilized by more than 15,000 students in Greece since 2018. It provides language learning opportunities mainly in Greek, especially benefiting students from migrant and refugee backgrounds.
