District League Table 2014

25th November 2014, Accra- In collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, UNICEF and CDD-Ghana is launching the Ghana District League Table on Tuesday 25th November 2014.

The District League Table is a new initiative that ranks all of Ghana’s 216 Districts by their level of development and service delivery  from the District in 1st place to that in 216th place.

Based on consultations with the key MDAs concerned, it uses indicators from 6 key sectors to compile a single score for each District, which are each then ranked. The sectors covered are: health, education, sanitation, water, governance and security.

The results show that the District sitting in first place, with a score of 76%, is Tano South in the Brong Ahafo Region. Whilst at the bottom of the league table, Karaga District in Northern region finds itself in 216th place with a score of just 15%. This means that the top performing District is doing 5 times better than the bottom performing District.

The Ashanti Region alone holds 8 out of Ghana’s top 20 Districts, while the Northern and Volta Regions hold 12 out of the bottom 20 Districts in Ghana.

The aim of the District League Table is to promote social accountability. This means that the results should be used to create dialogue and debate between the state and its citizens around improving local development and service delivery. The media’s role in this is fundamental.

With the District League Table, we can see for the first time ever which Districts are doing well in Ghana and can share lessons, and which are struggling and need particular support. The District League Table will be repeated on annual basis, showing where progress is being made.
