Poverty
Let's end the cycle of intergenerational poverty among children and adolescents.
Our goal for every child in The Gambia 2024-2028
We know that access to quality service provision is not sufficient to ensure the rights of every child, especially the most vulnerable. We also know that well-educated, healthy, and nourished children are more likely to be able to fulfil their potential, support their families, and actively contribute to economic growth and social development; therefore, we must work to ensure an end to intergeneration poverty.
With the support of our partners, UNICEF Gambia aims to continue to work with the Government of The Gambia to consolidate gains in social protection service delivery, while accelerating efforts in public finance for children. UNICEF Gambia will build on our existing public, and private, partnerships to advocate for sufficient, effective, and efficient, child-responsive planning and budgeting in social sectors to end the cycle of intergenerational poverty among children and adolescents.
By 2028, we will work to facilitate a 5% increase in the Government of Gambia’s budget allocation for health and education and a 10% increase to welfare. We will ensure that an additional 22,000 children are covered by social protection systems compared to 2023, resulting in total coverage of 100,000 vulnerable children.
