NEW YORK, 19 October 2004 – More than one million vaccinators and volunteers are going door-to-door in sub-Saharan Africa with one aim: to stop a polio epidemic from killing millions of children.

The looming threat has galvanized more than 23 countries, and aid agencies such as UNICEF, to mount the largest public health campaign of its kind in Africa.

The campaign began on 8 October and aims to immunize 80 million children against the deadly disease.

Since its resurgence in northern Nigeria, the polio virus has spread not just to neighbouring countries such as Niger but also to the Sudan (1,000 miles east) and even to Botswana (3,000 miles south).
