BHG 2001/007: Evaluation of Health Workers' Education in the Federation BIH: Nutritive Anaemia Among Children Under the Age of 6 Years

Executive summary


A significant percentage of disease among children and differences in diagnosis and the treatment of nutritive anaemia among doctors in the field of healthcare for pre-school children, have pointed to the need to educate health workers on the breakthroughs in diagnosis and treatment of nutritive anaemia.

Purpose / Objective

The goals of this evaluation of the education of health workers in the Federation on nutritive anaemia among children under the age of 6 are as follows:
- evaluation of new knowledge of doctors and nurses in the sphere of prevention, determining diagnosis, classification and the proper treatment of nutritive anaemia
- evaluation of seminar organisation and the level of education goals attainment
- recommendation for a possible better implementation of seminar, and the topics of future education


At the start and the end of the seminar the participants (164 health workers, of whom 50 were doctors and 114 nurses) were asked to fill out evaluation sheets which are used to conduct evaluation or seminar organisation, applied methodologies, topic contents, suggestion for improvement, theoretical and practical use of received information and the level of new knowledge.

Key Findings and Conclusions

Most participants liked the presentation and the contents of the lectures. There were no negative opinions in terms of the presentation and the subject matter. Most participants gave very high marks for the attainment of seminar goals. The percentage of nurses who think that they have now received the latest information on prevention, diagnosis, control and treatment of nutritive anaemia with which they so far had not been informed is 79.8%, among doctors it was 46.0%, while 10% of doctors believe that the new information that they received do not carry a large practical and theoretic importance. None of the seminar participants believes that the information they received had no significance.

Negative aspects of the seminar focused most frequently on the organisation, and the length of the seminar, saying that it should be longer. There were no remarks to the contents and the presentation of the seminar. Suggestions for seminar improvement were put forward by both doctors and nurses, especially the presentation of practical examples suggested by 34% of nurses and 26% of doctors.

The average level of pre-knowledge among doctors concerning prevention, criteria for diagnosis and therapy of nutritive anaemia among children under the age of 6 was evaluated at 3.3 points. The lowest level of pre-knowledge was shown by the doctors of the Paediatric Clinic in Sarajevo with 2.7 points, and the highest the doctors of the Health Clinic Novi Grad in Sarajevo with 3.7 points.

After the education, the average level of acquired knowledge significantly increased. The attained level of knowledge received on the average 4.1 points. The highest level of acquired knowledge was observed among doctors in the Novi Grad Health Clinic reaching 4.8 points, and the lowest again with the doctors of the Paediatric Clinic with 3.5 points.

The average level of pre-knowledge among nurses from this field was 3.5 points. The lowest level of pre-knowledge was demonstrated by nurses in Health Clinic in Kaknj with 2.3 points, while the highest was recorded among nurses in Health Clinic in Novi Grad and at the Emergency Ward - Hitna medicinska pomoæ (HMP) in Sarajevo with 4.3 points.

After the education in this field, the average level of newly acquired knowledge among nurses has increased significantly - 4.0 points on the average. The highest level of attained knowledge was registered among nurses of Health Clinic in Ilijas, 4.6 points, and the lowest among nurses from the School Polyclinic in Sarajevo, 3.4 points, which equals the number of points achieved in the pre-test.


The evaluation of attained level of knowledge of health workers on prevention, classification of diseases and therapy of nutritive anaemia showed that the seminar has reached its goal. The presented Protocol for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of nutritive anaemia among children under the age of 6 remains as a permanent written document for daily activities of health workers.
