231 million: The number of people in Africa who practice open defecation was 231 million in 2008

Millennium Development Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability 

Target 7C: Halve, by 2015, the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation

Indicator 7.9: Proportion of population using an improved sanitation facility

Since 1990, 173 million people in Africa have gained access to an improved sanitation facility.

Despite this increase, 231 million people in Africa still practised open defecation in 2008.
