Highlights

What UNICEF is calling for:

  1. States must ensure that procedural safeguards for children are in place – and independently monitored- throughout all asylum and immigration procedures and that all procedures are child-friendly, including the proposed screening, accelerated border and return procedures

  1. States must ensure child-friendly reception conditions in asylum and migration systems –at all times – and refrain from the use of closed facilities that may amount to de facto immigration detention.

  1. Children must have access to child protection systems and basic services when undergoing asylum and immigration procedures, including education, play, health and mental health
