Primary Healthcare Investment Case
In a recent rapid assessment of PHC3 in Eswatini conducted by World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2021, it was found that the implementation of the PHC approach is currently facing difficult challenges which could affect the quality of essential services.

The report of the “Investment Case of Primary Healthcare (PHC) in Eswatini” provides an overview of the PHC services in the country. It emphasizes the significance of PHC services for achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and the health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In addition, the report discusses the current spending on health and PHC in Eswatini, estimates the financial gaps in meeting the population's requirements, and assesses the effects of investing more in healthcare. It identifies the primary causes of maternal mortality and recommends innovative approaches to examine and combat these causes comprehensively. it also emphasizes the need to strengthen and scale up fundamental Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care Services (EmONC) in primary healthcare facilities to improve linkages with comprehensive EmONC services at the secondary and tertiary care levels in Eswatini. Finally, the report recommends key areas of focus for sustaining and mobilizing resources for PHC, such as the need to explicitly define PHC-level services, domestic revenue mobilization, and revitalizing PHC service delivery.
