Somalia, 30 August 2013: Media, Community oriented on the Somali Go 2 School Initiative

30, August 2013 - The Directorate of  Education in the Ministry of Human Development and Public Services, Somali Federal Republic, held a sensitization workshop on the Go -2 -School Initiative at the Jazeera Hotel in Mogadishu. The participants were comprised of Ministry Members who will be speaking with media and the general public in the coming weeks on the importance of education for Somalia at this time; radio announcers and other key influencers in the media and key community members, which are equally important in the dissemination of messages in Somalia.

During the forum the objectives of the workshop and the role of the Ministry were highlighted. UNICEF’s education officer, Mariam Abkow gave a presentation on the education sector in Somalia in general and the Go -2- School Initiative before opening up an interactive discussion on the issues.

Ahmed Ugas, one of the key facilitators talked about how the media could present education issues in an engaging way. Journalists received notes on the key messages, background, interview templates and examples of TV and radio scripts which could be used and adapted by presenter over the lead up to and launch of the Go- 2- School.

The Go-2-School Initiative (G2S) aims to enroll one million children and youth in school throughout Somalia in the next three years . This is a quarter of the total estimated number of out of school children and youth. The campaign, led by the Ministry, will include scaling up access to formal education, flexible education for pastoralist and out of school children, improved in-teacher training using innovative approaches and solar powered e-learning opportunities. The total budget for the G2S Initiative is US$ 117 million.
