South Africa, 1 February 2018: UNICEF hosts Fellows of the International Centre for Journalists

UNICEF South Africa ECD Specialist Andries Viviers addresses Fellows of the International Centre for Journalists.

PRETORIA, South Africa, 1 February 2018 – Following a request from the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), UNICEF South Africa hosted an information session where the issues around Early Childhood Development were presented and discussed.

The ICFJ is runs an Early Childhood Development Reporting Fellowship for journalists from a range of developing countries. Part of the fellowship includes two reporting trips to countries that are implementing a successful and innovative approach to supporting childhood development, hence South Africa was selected to travel to for their second reporting workshop. Comprising journalists from India, Nigeria, Brazil and Kenya, the group of 25 are now in the mid-stage of the programme of their year-long fellowship.

Delivering the presentation was Andries Viviers, ECD Specialist at UNICEF South Africa, who elaborated on the both the challenges and the opportunities that characterize ECD development and practice in South Africa. The presentation was followed by a discussion period in which a range of issues were raised by the Fellows, who also shared their country contexts with regard to ECD.

One-on-one interviews were conducted with Mr Viviers at the conclusion of the session and UNICEF South Africa was thanked by the ICFJ for its support of the Fellowship Programme.
