MOGADISHU, Somalia, 15 November 2015 – The Somali authorities, with the support of UNICEF and WHO, have launched a new measles campaign at the same time as a new polio vaccine – both aimed at saving the lives of Somali children.

The launch was attended by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud and the Health Minister Hawa Hassan Mohamed as well as Steven Lauwerier, UNICEF Somalia Representative and Dr Ghulam Popal, WHO Representative in Somalia.

The measles vaccination campaign is aimed at protecting children under the age of 10 years from measles. To date in 2015, there have been nearly 7,000 suspected cases of measles. The measles campaign will target nearly 4 million Somali children under the age of 10 years who will receive the measles vaccine along with vitamin A drops.
