ANTANANARIVO, Madagascar, 8 May 2017 – Gerda Verburg, Coordinator of the global Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) movement, has concluded a two-day official visit to Madagascar. The SUN movement, supported by 59 countries, has a common goal of overcoming malnutrition in all its forms. Activities of the SUN movement are implemented in participating countries by the national government, in collaboration with United Nations agencies, civil society, the private sector, donors, and researchers. Madagascar joined the SUN movement in 2012.

During her mission, Ms Verburg met with senior government officials, including the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister and members of the government in charge of sectors related to nutrition. She also met with all stakeholders in the nutrition sector, including key donors to Madagascar, particularly those supporting the nutrition sector, including, inter alia, the World Bank, USAID, the European Union, the African Development Bank, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

"The visit of the Coordinator of the SUN movement to Madagascar is a great honor to all those who are working to eradicate the scourge of malnutrition," said Ambinintsoa Raveloharison, National Coordinator of the National Office for Nutrition (ONN).

Ms Verburg also visited ONN in Anosy to witness firsthand the structure and organization of the coordination of the fight against malnutrition in Madagascar.

Ms Verburg's meeting with heads of agency of the UN system focused on the UN’s contributions in the fight against malnutrition in Madagascar, including in the domains of emergency response and coordination. Discussions focused on challenges as well as opportunities, notably with a view to the launch of the Nutrition Investment Plan for Madagascar and the National Plan of Action for Nutrition 2017-2021, taking place this Thursday 11 May in Antananarivo.
