Responding to the mental health impact of COVID-19 on adolescents and young people in Eastern and Southern Africa

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted adolescents' lives and plans for the future. A UNICEF study reviewed available evidence from Eastern and Southern Africa on the effect of the pandemic on adolescents' mental health and wellbeing. Findings confirmed that adolescents experienced heightened anxiety and depression. These two technical briefs provide key considerations for policy makers and programme implementors on making investments that will have an impact beyond the COVID-19 pandemic and ensuring that adolescents' mental health and psychosocial support needs are met through accessible, sustainable and quality services.
