As the year is coming to an end, UNICEF has been distributing school supply kits to refugee students of all education stages, from kindergarten till secondary, as well as distributing kindergarten grants to refugee school children, aged from 3 to 6 years, in order to support their enrollment in education.

Thanks to the generous support of the Embassy of Netherlands in Egypt, USAID, the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration and the Kuwait Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the ongoing distribution began in December and will continue till the end of the month. A total of 62,000 children in Greater Cairo, Alexandria and Damietta will receive the school supply kits. In addition, approximately 9,000 kindergarten-aged children will receive education grants. The following photo gallery portrays a typical day of supplies and cash grant distribution to refugee children from Syria and sub-Saharan African countries, amongst others.

Every day, our implementing partner, Catholic Relief Service, welcomes 1,300 refugees to either receive the kindergarten grants and/or school kits. To manage this huge flow of people, the help desk is the first point of contact to welcome the beneficiaries and direct them towards the appropriate services and benefits.

When the parents reach the counter in the reception area, the employees conduct a verification process, which ensures families receive the correct assistance. Many parents rely on the education grant to cover the costs of education for their children, at a time when vulnerabilities are increasing. “I applied for the kindergarten grant for two of my children and I can’t begin to describe how we benefited from it. It has secured the commuting between our home and the school.”, says Seham Omar from Sudan.

At the next stage, the parent is ready to receive the school supplies. “As I am their caregiver, I came here today to receive school kits for my children and nieces, as well as the kindergarten grant for my niece Rahaf, who is 6 years old. They are all very excited to receive their school kits, especially the coloring book.”, says Hayah Daniel from Sudan.

The school supplies kit has been designed to ensure children attending school have enough basic supplies to learn. Parents appear to be almost excited as their children by the new supplies: “My kids got very excited when I told them I am bringing home school bags, coloring pens and water flasks! They can’t wait to go to school with their brand-new school supplies.”, says Hanady El Boghdady, a mother of 4 children from Syria.

“I love my bag! It has everything I need for school.”, says Sohieb Adnan, 11 years old from Syria. Sohieb has decided to accompany his mother in picking up the school kits and the kindergarten grant for his siblings.

“Today I am receiving a school bag and a kindergarten grant for my kid who is 5 years old. The grant helped me a lot in supporting his enrollment in school, especially that I have eight children of different ages. I will definitely apply for my youngest who will turn three years old in few months, to ensure that all my children are well educated.” Said Hoda Ahmed from Sudan.

After receiving the school kit and the grant, the parent is ready to leave the premises of CRS. “I can’t wait to see my daughter’s face when she sees her brand-new bag!” said Abdo Haloum from Syria.
