On June 15th, 2023, a few days before Father’s Day (June 21st) and in line with the Global Parenting Month, UNICEF and the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MoYS) organized a family-friendly festival where children and their parents from different governorates in Egypt attended; that day was an excellent opportunity for all of them to participate in a joint activity and develop stronger relationships. The festival occurred in the Maadi Olympic Center in Cairo and featured various activities for parents and children of all ages. There were sports competitions, games, arts and crafts using recycled material.
Jannat, a 14-year-old girl, and her family, amongst hundreds of other families, came to spend a day with her family and bond through sports and other activities. Playing sports is integral to Jannat’s family, and her father always encourages her and her brother Nour to exercise. Jannat practices taekwondo at the Giza Youth Center and says that usually, “her father comes to watch and not to engage with her.” Mohamed, Jannat, and Nour were happy to participate in this event as they could find joint activities beyond studying and family gatherings. They also expressed their willingness to repeat this experience as it helped them connect and engage as a family.
