The Ministry of Health, AmCham and UNICEF join hands to fight COVID-19
CAIRO, 27 September 2020 – In coordination with the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) Foundation, UNICEF has procured and delivered 950,000 units of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE); as well as 25 respiratory ventilators to the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP).
The procurement has been done under the umbrella of the partnership between UNICEF and AmCham Egypt. Toward that end, AmCham Egypt Foundation provided $1 Million USD to UNICEF for the procurement of preventative medical supplies and emergency equipment through UNICEF’s Global Supply Division.
“The outstanding and continued efforts of healthcare workers and all the front liners who are doing their part to control the COVID19 pandemic are not only valuable but highlight our duty to support them in every way”, said Mr. Jeremy Hopkins, UNICEF Representative in Egypt. “We extend a special thanks to our partner AmCham for assembling the Private Sector and Businessmen Alliance against coronavirus, the supplies provided show that now, more than ever, the ability for Government, Private Sector and UNICEF to come together, to limit the spread of this global pandemic as only with these combined efforts will the fight against COVID-19 be successful”, Hopkins added.
As a leading representative of the private sector, representing almost 2000 Members and Companies, AmCham Egypt formed an alliance comprising of representatives from key private sector companies. Through this alliance, AmCham Egypt fundraised and collected donations from its private sector member companies and channeled the proceeds to COVID-19 efforts.
"AmCham is proud of the outcomes of its campaign with UNICEF 'The Private Sector and Businessmen Alliance Against Covid 19', in support of Egypt's efforts to fight the pandemic. We are thankful to the generous support of our Alliance Members which ensured the success of the campaign", said AmCham CEO, Sylvia Menassa.
The procured PPEs and ventilators were provided to the MoHP then delivered to hospitals and health care centers throughout the country.
“On behalf of UNICEF, I would like to thank our private sector partners for their commitment and generous support to help us respond to this crisis and its knock-on effects. Thanks to their generous assistance UNICEF contributed to the enormous response lead by the Egyptian Government to protect the most vulnerable children and their families” said Jeremy Hopkins, UNICEF Representative in Egypt.
