Cairo, November 3, 2022 - The Faculty of Economics and Political Science at Cairo University, in cooperation with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), organized the second edition of the scientific conference on "Child and Adolescent Well-Being in Egypt", as part of the activities of the joint cooperation programme between the two parties.
The conference was inaugurated by Dr. Tarek Tawfik, Deputy Minister of Health and Population for Population Affairs, Dr. Mahmoud Al-Saeed, Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Political Science at Cairo University, and Dr. Fazlul Haque, Deputy Representative of UNICEF Egypt.
In addition to the opening and closing sessions, the conference included three scientific sessions that discussed three main themes related to children and adolescent well-being, namely malnutrition, the role of child and adolescent relationships with their families in relation to their well-being, and the impact of socio-economic factors on the well-being of children and adolescents. These sessions aimed at presenting a range of outstanding research papers submitted by researchers from various fields and disciplines. They included different visions, ideas and proposed policies to improve the well-being of children and adolescents in Egypt. These papers have been selected through a rigorous scientific review process by professors and practitioners specialized in these fields. Based on the recommendations of the members of the conference’s scientific committee, the best papers were selected and celebrated in the closing session of the conference and financial support was provided for them.
The conference included a roundtable discussion on the importance of evidence for children and their role in making evidence-based policies. This roundtable brought together a selected group of practitioners and policy makers in this field, from the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, the Ministry of Finance and Abdel Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab to present their views and experiences regarding the importance of research and their role in promoting sustainable development and achieving multidimensional equity for children and young people.
The partnership between Faculty of Economics and Political Science and UNICEF aims to better design, implement, monitor, and evaluate public policies and programs through high quality data and evidence-based multi-disciplinary research. The partnership also supports national capacities in the field of public finance and public policies related to social inclusion, with the objective of developing participatory platforms between academia, policy makers, government officials and the media to influence and contribute to the policy making process.
