-The Jetix Kids Cup 2004 (formerly Fox Kids Cup) was dedicated to Go Girls! Education for Every Child for the second year in row. Finals were held from 21 to 23 June at the Manchester United Soccer School at Disneyland Resort Paris where several hundred children from 16 countries competed for the world championship title.
The competition was fierce but friendly. The boys’ team from Brazil and the French girls’ team defended their titles against teams from Argentina, Bulgaria, Georgia, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Spain, UK and USA.
Emotions filled the playing field on Wednesday as the finals teams competed. In close games, the boys' team from Brazil conceded victory to Israel after a two to three score. The USA girls' team beat Spain one to zero.
Fair play and sportsmanship were a must and girls’ and boys’ teams alike demonstrated their talent, teamwork and determination.
One event highlight is the UNICEF Fair Play Award and this year, Olympic athlete and long distance runner Berhane Adere from Ethiopia handed out the trophy to the winning girls’ and boys’ teams of United Kingdom and Norway respectively.
Ms. Adere is a UNICEF spokesperson for girls’ education and has been campaigning on behalf of every child’s right to play and receive an education.
The Jetix Kids Cup is the world’s largest under-13 football tournament of its kind for girls and boys with over one million kids participating in the national championship events in 192 cities around the world.
With Go Girls! and UNICEF logos on boards, banners and every player’s jersey, the Jetix Kids Cup provides a large platform to promote UNICEF’s girls’ education campaigns.
