UNICEF’s parenting application ‘Bebbo’ turns one
The digital innovation that offers high-quality parenting support has launched in 12 countries and has been downloaded over 300,000 times worldwide.
Geneva, 19 November 2022 - The parenting application ‘Bebbo’ celebrated it’s first birthday on Saturday, 19 November. One year ago, UNICEF Europe and Central Asia Regional Office (ECARO) launched the digital innovation together with 12 countries across the region: Albania, Belarus, Bulgaria, Greece, Kosovo*, Kyrgyzstan, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Tajikistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.
Ivelina Borisova, Regional Advisor on Early Childhood Development in UNICEF Office for Europe and Central Asia noted “Bebbo was born during the COVID-19 pandemic, when services for parents and young children were severely disrupted. A year after, we see that we have a powerful innovation that can serve hundreds of thousands of parents with timely and expert advice that helps them in their most precious task of all – raising their children. We thank our partners who have supported development and launch of Bebbo and all the parents and caregivers using the application for an amazing first year together!”
Development began in 2019 by a multidisciplinary team of UNICEF experts on early childhood development and digital technologies to support the consistent and accurate tracking of young children’s development from birth to the early years—a challenge many parents across the region were facing. Since then, UNICEF has worked closely with government partners, UNICEF offices in the region, and ECD professionals to ensure the application both matches parents’ needs and aligns with bespoke national recommendations.
Since its launch on 19 November 2021, Bebbo has attracted over 300,000 users worldwide, predominantly across the ECA region. Users are offered daily parenting advice and activity ideas based on their child’s age and are equipped with several parenting tools throughout the application that help them track their child’s vaccinations, health check-ups and growth. This means thousands of young children aged between 0-6 years old are benefitting from interactions with more attentive, active, and informed caregivers.
“Given that we live in an era of internet communication and the rise of social networks, we tend to be overwhelmed with information and advice from various sources and are unable to immediately assess the reliability of some of the information. The Bebbo app saves me time and energy because everything I find in it comes from a credible institution, so I recommend it to all the parents I know.” — Maja, mother of a five year old girl from Montenegro.
Bebbo has also been a key element of the region-wide Ukraine refugee response plan, offering parents displaced by the conflict in Ukraine specialized support regarding fostering their child’s development during times of crisis, parental mental health and well-being, and keeping themselves and their children safe.
