OneMinutesJr workshop in Batken - Day 5

BATKEN, Kyrgyzstan, 22 November 2013 - Day 5 of the workshop and yes, we are getting there! Two more films are in the making, the rest is in the editing and fine-tuning process and already almost finished. Maksatai (14) and Orozgul are the last two participants who are working with the cameras. Maksatai helped the others a lot during the whole workshop and is really talented with the camera and as a director. Orozgul spent a lot of time working with a teacher on the water-colour drawing for her animated movie about a mudflow.

Since the videos will be used locally, we are producing a "clean" Kyrgyz version without any subtitles and an international version with English subtitles and of course also English movie titles. This takes a lot of time and everybody is busy doing this or filling in the application forms for the annual competition.

Once all films are ready, we can go and set up the screen and the projector in the theatre upstairs in the Karabak Middle School. Participants, friends and neighbours are already here and also the director and teachers from the schools as well as representatives of the local authorities.

The presentation of all films is great and everybody is more than happy with the results. Some of the films are real eye-openers and they are great to watch for other young people and raise important questions and sometimes even answers about the topic of the workshop - Disaster Risk Reduction.

Next on the agenda are the Annual OneMinutesJr Awards next week in Amsterdam. We will hold a masterclass for the 15 nominees from around the world and are looking forward to seeing familiar faces from the 2012/2013 workshops. The nominees this year come from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ukraine, Armenia, Georgia, Vietnam, Libya, Mexico, Cambodia and Pakistan.

And maybe one or two of the children from the workshop that ends today in Batken will make it to the 2014 Awards, the chances are definitely not bad...
