OneMinutesJr workshop on Violence against children in Georgia - Day 1

by Chris Schuepp

UNICEF Georgia will soon publish a report that takes stock of the general public's knowledge, attitude, behaviors and practices around the issue of violence against children. The study is quantitative and contains data gathered in more than 3,000 households randomly selected across the country.

The teenagers at the workshop will develop their own stories and the finished product, a series of 20 OneMinutesJr videos, will add a very important personal and visual component to the quantitative study.

On the first day of the training, a topical introduction and some background on the OneMinutesJr project are first on the agenda. After that, the trainers and the children discuss initial ideas in an open brainstorming session.

Violence takes place in different locations here in Georgia. The children tell us about problems in school, in the streets and at home. Physical violence does not seem to be the number one concern of the participants at the workshop. Many of them speak about psychological violence and the effects of domestic violence between parents that takes a toll on the children.

The rest of the first day of the workshop is spent in individual sessions with trainers and children, shaping the ideas into scenarios and storyboards that can be filmed and edited throughout this week. Tomorrow will be another intensive day of discussions and story development, but there are already some great ideas floating around...
