India — ending child marriage

Even though child marriage is illegal in India there is enormous social and economic pressure in rural areas for families to marry their daughters young. Child marriage not only interrupts a girls’ education, it sets her and her children up for a lifetime of health and developmental problems and continues a cycle of poverty. UNICEF and the European Union work with the people of Rajasthan to help them realize that their best hope for a prosperous future is to not let girls marry until they are 18.
