Highlights

UNICEF and World Vision International co-hosted the first virtual regional conference on 'Building Pathways to Empowerment Conference on Young People's Rights to Civic Engagement in East Asia and Pacific', on the 28th and 29th October 2021. The conference focused on the empowerment of adolescents and young people through their meaningful engagement and participation in social development.  It was the first conference that was entirely co-designed with young people, where the topics of discussion were also selected by the partnering youth organisations and networks. The conference featured young innovators, youth activists, academics, legal experts, government officials, civil society, and the private sector.

This report highlights key insights and observations presented by adolescents and young people, experts, and practitioners on the concept of the Right to Participation as articulated in the Convention on the Rights of the Child; existing challenges and barriers to meaningful participation, especially for marginalised groups including young girls, those with disabilities, LGBTIQ communities, and ethnic minority groups. In particular, and good practices across the region. The Report includes a set of recommendations that were drafted by over 120 adolescents and young people from across the region.
