Celebrating Global Handwashing Day 2009
The multi-sectoral participation in observing the GHWD in DPRK is a recognition of the fact that hand washing with soap is a critical and low cost intervention that can prevent disease and save lives.
The Global Hand Washing Day (GHWD) was observed in DPR Korea on 15th October 2009 facilitated by UNICEF DPRK.
The main event was organized in Pyoksong County in South Hwanghae Province, about 200 km way from Pyongyang City, the Capital of DPRK. The event was attended by senior officials from three ministries that UNICEF works with (Ministry of Public Health, Ministry of Education and Ministry of City Management), advisors from the National Coordination Committee for UNICEF,the UNICEF Representative and UNICEFs WASH, Health and Education Officers.
"the children are effective messengers and they can teach their siblings and parents about the importance of handwashing with soap"
The event was organized in Primary and Nursery Schools of Pyoksong town. The session started with an inaugural speech by the Director of Education highlighting the importance of hand washing for the health of children, followed by children’s activities including a quiz on the importance of hand washing with soap and peer to peer demonstration of hand washing by primary class students. The activity in nursery school involved demonstration of hand washing with soap by a care giver which was then followed by the singing of 15 small children about clean hands and good health.
The uniqueness of the event lay in the participation of three key line ministries. The representative of national print media (Pyongyang Times) accompanied the visitors. The UNICEF Representative was interviewed on the importance of hand washing and UNICEF supported interventions for the same. The key message to children from the Representative was that “the children are effective messengers and they can teach their siblings and parents about the importance of handwashing with soap and demonstrate how to wash hands with soap properly”.
