The mission of the Red Cross Society (RCS) in DPR Korea is to prevent and alleviate the suffering of people, promote their health and welfare, contribute to friendship and cooperation among peoples and thus contribute to world peace.  RCS provides support in the fields of disaster preparedness and relief, health promotion and first-aid services.

The International Federation’s Secretariat has worked closely with the DPR Korea Red Cross since 1995.  The focus of the Federation’s response began with emergency relief but has moved to integrated longer term health, disaster preparedness and response and capacity building programmes.

The DPR Korea Red Cross continues to respond to disasters with the support of the Federation.  The most recent disaster was in Ryongchon in April 2004, when a train explosion caused major damage to housing, schools and medical facilities.
