ZAGREB, February 14, 2023 – A cooperation agreement was signed at the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs on Monday, 13 February, between the Government of the Republic of Croatia and the UNICEF Office for Croatia for the donation of 50 generators that will enable the continuous operation of hospitals and schools in Ukraine. The Agreement is worth one million EUR which will be transferred to UNICEF Ukraine for the procurement and distribution of the generators.
Providing support to Ukraine is the fifth in a series of projects on which the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs successfully cooperates with UNICEF as part of its Official Development Assistance (ODA). ODA refers to activities and measures designed to promote sustainable development in less developed countries. These activities are funded from the state budget of the Republic of Croatia and are used in accordance with the regulations of the OECD Development Assistance Committee on official development assistance for the provision of bilateral, trilateral, multilateral development assistance and international humanitarian assistance.
"By joining the EU, the Republic of Croatia actively participates in the creation and implementation of development and humanitarian policy at the level of the European Union. One of the priorities of the foreign policy of the Republic of Croatia is the provision of development and humanitarian assistance abroad. Through development and humanitarian projects, Croatia, bilaterally and multilaterally, together with the EU member states and through United Nations agencies, works to alleviate difficult living conditions. We thank UNICEF for being a long-term responsible partner with whom we jointly support the most vulnerable," said Gordan Grlić Radman, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, during the signing of the cooperation agreement.
"Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, UNICEF has been providing support and assistance to children and families, but the winter months are extra difficult and challenging, and the needs are greater. Always, but especially in the circumstances in which Ukraine is, it is extremely important to ensure the continuity of the operation of key facilities such as hospitals and schools. I am pleased that this donation will directly contribute to that aim. We have been successfully cooperating with the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs on Official Development Assistance projects since 2018, and have together supported children and families in Yemen, Lebanon, Jordan and Egypt. We are proud and grateful that UNICEF is recognized as a reliable partner that will direct international humanitarian aid to important programs and activities for girls and boys and their families around the world”, said Regina M. Castillo, Representative of the UNICEF Office for Croatia.
Previous cooperation projects of MFEA and the UNICEF Office in Croatia within ODA include:
- Ensuring quality and timely health care for Syrian refugees in Egypt, with special emphasis on children and women as the most vulnerable – 2022
- Protection and improving the educational conditions of Syrian refugee children in Jordan by financing the construction of five playgrounds for children with disabilities in Azraq and Za'atari refugee camps
- Humanitarian aid to children and families in Yemen
- Reconstruction of inclusive children's playgrounds in Lebanon
