The Global Muslim Philanthropy Fund for Children

An innovative new funding platform

The Global Muslim Philanthropy Fund for Children (GMPFC) is a joint initiative between UNICEF and the Islamic Development Bank Group (IsDB.) Its unique design provides a channel for Muslim philanthropists to fulfill their religious duties of giving Zakat, as well as voluntary Saddaqah charity. The fund contributes to emergency response and development programmes benefiting all children in the 57 Member Countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

One of the benefits of the annual mandatory giving of Zakat is to provide the receiver with a means of lifting themselves out of poverty and need, in a manner that protects their dignity. This purpose precisely aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals, underlining the potential value of GMPFC in directing Zakat funds to help achieve the child-related SDGs, and reach the more than 89 million children currently in need of humanitarian support.

A Ramadan Mubarak message from UNICEF’s Executive Director, Henrietta Fore

“Muslim Philanthropy will be at the forefront in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Now, more than ever, Muslim philanthropists around the world need to act collectively and think strategically to maximise their impact. The partnership between the Islamic Development Bank and UNICEF to create the Global Muslim Philanthropy Fund for Children offers a vital new platform to achieve this goal. It is my fervent hope that Muslim philanthropists will look at this opportunity as an amanah, a trust that Allah SWT has bestowed upon us to fulfil.”  - Tun Dr Mahathir Bin Mohamad.

The Fund will be administered by the IsDB and unite proceeds from private and public foundations, Zakat agencies and individuals. All prospective projects are developed by a joint programme committee and approved by the fund Governing Council. Currently, projects under exploration include:

• Lifesaving nutrition for 70,000 children in Afghanistan
• Clean water, sanitation facilities and nutrition for 300,000 individuals affected by Covid-19 in Iraq
• Clean water and sanitation for 300,000 vulnerable mothers and children in Pakistan
• Clean and safe drinking water for 135,000 displaced and vulnerable people in Somalia
• Covid-19 pandemic response in the 9 high-risk states in Sudan
