Youth radio producers from Zambia and Mexico have won the 2006 UNICEF/OneWorld Radio Prize, presented by UNICEF and OneWorld Radio.
The award is given to a radio programme produced by youth that reflects the 2006 theme “UNITE FOR CHILDREN. UNITE AGAINST AIDS.” The winners were chosen from over 70 submissions from 10 different countries.
UNICEF and OneWorld Radio presented a contest for radio features and public service announcements to celebrate young people’s participation in the media. The UNICEF/OneWorld Radio Prize recognizes radio programming that gives a central role to children – as producers, editors, reporters and presenters – and allows them to give their own perspective on the world around them. It also recognizes the importance of radio in communities often unreachable by other media.
And the winners are:
First Place: “Living with HIV” by Jose Yesani (Zambia)
Honorable Mention: “In the Mother’s Womb” by Nikita Jain (India)
“Thembi’s AIDS Diary” by Thembi Ngubane and Joe Richman (South Africa/USA)
First Place: “Lupita” by Desarrollo Autogestionario AC (AUGE) (Mexico)
Honorable Mention: “Get to Work” by David Daka (Zambia)
“Soy Tavo” by Desarrollo Autogestionario AC (AUGE) (Mexico)
The judging, by a panel from OneWorld, UNICEF and radio organizations, took place in November. Judges included Kelvin Chibomba, OneWorld Radio Africa (Zambia); Marianne McCune, WNYC (USA); Bernice Akuamoah, Youth radio producer (Gambia); Jonathan Goldstein, Producer and Host, Wiretap, CBC Radio (Canada); Esther Obdam, Radio Netherlands; Blue Chevigny, Executive Producer, UNICEF Radio; Jeannette Gonzalez, UNICEF/VOY Media Magic Coordinator and Karen Cirillo, Executive Producer, Children’s Broadcasting Initiatives, UNICEF (USA).
The winners' work will be featured on both the OneWorld Radio and UNICEF sites and podcast by UNICEF Radio. Winners are awarded radio equipment, and all finalists will be recognized with a commemorative plaque.
