Led by the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the UN family launched a consolidated appeal for the Horn of Africa in April 2006, requesting over $400 million to save lives and restore livelihoods devastated by the drought. UN agencies are working to provide emergency assistance, help communities regain their livelihoods and reduce future vulnerability to cycles of drought. Supported by OCHA, the Pastoralist Communication Initiative works with herders to ensure that they have a voice in development policies and plans that affect them. Key UNICEF partners include the World Health Organization, World Food Programme, United Nations Development Programme and Food and Agricultural Organization.
