UNICEF Moldova Representative awarded medal of honour

The UNICEF Representative in Moldova, Ray Virgilio Torres, has been decorated by the Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin with one of the most important Moldovan State Awards - “Ordinul de Onoare” (Medal of Honor).

This decoration was conferred on Mr Torres as a sign of deep gratitude for his special contribution to the reform of the social protection of children in Moldova. The Moldovan President addressed sincere greetings to Ray Virgilio Torres, mentioning his intensive work while serving as Representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund in Moldova, as well as the contribution of the entire UNICEF team to the protection of children’s rights.

“I am deeply honored and take it as an acknowledgement of the dedication and hard work of all UNICEF colleagues who worked in the Moldova office since its establishment”, said Mr Torres during the award ceremony held in Chisinau. 

Ray V. Torres spoke about radical reform in the area of social protection of children, including the establishment of a network of social assistants that is used to identify the most vulnerable families and children throughout the country.

At the end of his diplomatic mission, Ray Virgilio Torres met the Moldovan Prime Minister, Zinaida Greceani. Mrs Greceanai expressed her appreciation of the work of UNICEF in Moldova. She said that “Ordinul de Onoare” is an assessment of personal merits of the UNICEF Representative and merits of the UNICEF team for the support provided to the Moldovan State in its work for the younger generation.
Mr Torres was awarded by H.E. Victor Tvircun, Minister of Education and Youth, the highest Moldovan distinction in the field of Education and Culture, the medal “Alexei Mateevici”. Mr. Torres was awarded the decoration for professionalism, devotion to education and contribution to the modernisation of the Moldovan education system.
