DERVENTA, BiH, 15 November 2011 - On the second day of the OneMinutesJr workshop in Derventa in Republika Srpska not far from the Croatian border we continue with individual brainstorming session with the participants. There was already a number of great ideas yesterday and there are more to come right now.

As we hold the workshop in School "19th of April" in Derventa, quite a few stories play in the school environment. The children spend a large part of their days here and so they are concerned with everything that happens here. Katarina is very unhappy with the school furniture. Many of the desks and chair are about to fall apart and the 13-year-old says: "It is hard to learn properly here. The problem is not new, but nobody does anything about it."

For Sumeja (14) trouble already starts before she reaches the school building. She was bitten by one of the many stray dogs last year and is terrified every time she approaches dogs on the way to school. We find out that this is also a well-known problem in Derventa, but that it also has not been addressed yet and that there are no signs of change on the horizon. But what if Sumeja makes a film about it and calls the mayor of the city in for an interview...?

Jovana's storyboard and the location for her film, the first one we shot here at the workshop in Derventa.
One of the trainers from the Genesis Project in Banja Luka shows the children how to work with the cameras and the tripods while we finish the story development with some of the others in a different classroom.

In the afternoon then we are ready to shoot the first films. Silvana is working the camera for Jovana's film about a boy who has to work a lot in his family's garden and does not have any spare-time to spend with his friends.

It gets dark very early and we continue filming inside the school where the "furniture concert" takes place now in room #22. The desks and chairs are leaning to all sides, making funny sounds and the children are obviously enjoying the shooting.

Before we call it a day, there's one more film on the agenda: Olja's scary way home from school. It will be a pretty dark and grim movie, but that is exactly how Olja feels every day in fall and winter when she walks the 3 kilometers home in the freezing cold.
